Our Stomping Grounds Festival

Surprising Stomping Grounds
Community Collages

Our Stomping Grounds are all around us – places we are familiar with and which we sometimes take for granted. We sometimes forget to look closely to spot the magic, the surprising and let them inspire our imaginations.

We held community participation workshops as part of this project and in one of the visual arts ones we decided to take familiar places and fill them with surprises. Artists and creative people see things that not everyone does and then share them. Full Circle had great fun working with residents from some of our local residential homes, the resulting collages from which, we hope will make you smile.

The original image is of the Victoria Bridge in Stockton, a metal bridge painted in blue and cream. There is a very wide shot of the River Tees. The artist has added the following collage details to the lower part of the image. A large exotic green tree has been added to the riverbank. There are two large fish in the river – one is a huge goldfish and the other is a grey and orange striped diamond shaped fish. A zebra is on the wooden jetty looking at another goldfish, whilst a larger fish is on the jetty above them. A green parrot flies away.

The original image is of the fountains in Stockton Town Centre – they are lit up in blue and pink. It is evening time and a crescent moon is in the sky creating silhouettes if the town hall and it’s clock tower and a row of shops on the high street. The artist has decided to line the border of the image with collage details and not put any directly onto the original image, although there are a couple of overlaps. A giant pineapple dominates the right of the image and echoes the curve of the fountain flagstones. Following the border around there is a bulldog, a tiger, a large planet, a yellow New York taxi, a couple of pears on a branch overlap in the bottom left corner. There is then an illustration of a tin robot, a strange birdlike creature with a funnel on it’s head, a dolls house, a red and blue butterly, a small vintage American bus and a large vintage American bus. A greyhound bus full of people brings us back to the pineapple.

The original image is of the fountains in Stockton Town Centre – they are lit up in blue and pink. It is evening time and an obscured crescent moon is in the sky creating silhouettes of a row of shops on the high street. A giant goldfish with black marking sweeps into the image with it’s mouth open as if it is going to swallow up a smaller yellow speckled fish. Where the moon would be is a giant upside down cabbage and in the top left corner is a cantaloupe melon cut in half to reveal a golden circle and seeds. In the bottom left corner is a green fir tree in which a large green frog is perching. To the left of the fir tree is a large orange pumpkin and to the right a giant caterpillar is on a giant pear. To the bottom right corner an elephant leads a giraffe into the image.
