The Beginnings of In/Visible

In 2020 we ran a project called Half Way There which centred on disabled women over 50. Through our work and conversations, we realised that many of our voices were missing from public life, and although many of us are making massive contributions, we don't have many opportunities to meet with each other to share our experiences.

During the Half Way There project we created a radio drama called The UnSung, informed by the voices of disabled women, by Vici Wreford-Sinnott with co-creators Mandy Colleran, Jacqueline Phillips, Cheryl Martin and Caroline Parker, and we also held two online community workshops with disabled women over 50. It was a total joy to be creative together and also to have a chance to chat about things. In the community workshops a gap was identified about a lack of meeting points, and we acknowledged the importance of being connected and community.

We thought about informal settings where women come together to chat while they are creating something whether its writing or crafting in some way. What a lovely thing to do - to be able to touch base and have a space just for us. So with the support of Arts Council we're able to get started.  You don't have to be remotely arty as we're going to try a few different things out, and if you are arty there will be lots to try too!

So that's what IN/visible is. 'IN' is our meeting point - 15 online sessions for a group of 10 disabled women over 50 to chat while being creative together- we'll try out a number of creative activities, and 'visible' is that we'll share our creations and our thoughts online in images and writing fortnightly. The sessions are led by Vici Wreford-Sinnott but everyone is involved in planning what we do and how we approach things.

The project started on International Women's Day 2022 and runs until 5 July.

Two similar line drawings. The one on the left is by Picasso and the one on the right is by Caroline. The line drawing is of an older man with slicked down hair, wearing a large baggy three piece suit and tie with a pocket handkerchief sticking out of his top pocket. He is seated in a wooden framed chair and is sitting with legs crossed and his large hands are linked together in front of him as his arms rest on the chair.

Central to this collage is an etched black and white portrait of a 19th century woman wearing a short bead necklace. There is a small gap around her face creating a suggestion of detachment. All of the other print is has colour. Her hair is multi coloured floral images, lilacs, rust, pale blue and the artist has created a hat with text which reads 'rebel authoritative woman'. The background is a patchwork of subtle vintage floral prints including two tall daisies, a range of leaves, daffodils, bluebells and ferns. The artist has created a the shoulder and arm of a dress with a large pastel floral print which includes a pale blue hand catching a large drop of blue water. Text is arranged in select areas of the collage and reads, 'Let's take up more space', 'embrace beautiful chaos', and 'trust your crazy ideas'.

A bold black print on a blue back ground. It is an irregular chape with a spiral from a wood block at its centre, suggestive of an ammonite fossil. By Vici Wreford-Sinnott
Printmaking involves rolling several layers of coloured inks to create abstract images. This image is predominantly blue background and has bold mixes of orange, dark blue, and hints of red and yellow. Whit ink has been splattered into drops after the print was complete.

Mosaics - We are Visible, We are Here
Kindness Stones and Trails
Mosaic by Alex Dechbamrung. The mosaic kits were created by Little Cog inspired by work seen on the internet. Within a brown wooden picture frame is a mosaic of each participant's name, created using scrabble style letter tiles, in this case Alex. The mosaic is created from a number of small square glass tiles in a range of colours and broken pieces of glass, again in a range of colours, arranged decoratively and grouted in position. Some strong blues, oranges and greens mixed in.

Lynne has made a beautiful art book from scratch. She has collated lots of lovely patterned pages, sometimes doubling them over to make them stronger and then threaded multi coloured thread through three holes down one side to keep them all together. Onto each page she has pasted new images, artworks she has created, mementos and souvenirs, and collage accessories. Two pages are shared here. First on the left, the background is mutli-shades of blue with a hint of purple. Framed with three pen lines is a vintage birthday scene including a clown, some balloons and a birthday tea, at the centre of which is a birthday cake. Text reads – ‘A birthday is special, a time to remember. Choose hard to beat refreshments like ice cream (peppermint) and cake (with candy balloons on the outside, fortune charms inside). And, give balloons to take home. At the bottom of the page Lynne has selected a line of text to add which reads, ‘a party without cake is just a meeting’. The next page is a riot of bold multi coloured patterns over which Lynne has places a series of images and text. At the top is an image of two plants – a close up of a spiky headed circular bloom and then a cluster of them on a stem with foliage. Bottom right is a vintage cherry brandy advertisement with a plate of cherries. Bottom right is an image of two elegant tulips leaning into each other. Lynne has selected lines of text – ‘find joy in the ordinary’, ‘collect beautiful moments’ and ‘remember to play’.
