Anti-Ableism for the Arts Sector
These sessions are professional development and training for arts organisations and venues in a similar vein to disability equality training. Sessions for disabled artists are the Crucial Conversations which you can find out more about here Crucial Conversations - LITTLE COG
Staff from arts venues and organisations are invited to join us online to explore anti-ableist practices in the arts. There are three different sessions you can join online looking at anti-ableist practices, disabled narratives in drama and performance, and cultural equity beyond access. Over the last five years we have seen a significant increase in the numbers of arts professionals, companies, galleries and theatres, acknowledging the missing voices and art work of disabled artists, with allies coming forward. We also know that data has shown the dearth of employment in the arts of disabled people, and fair minded and equitable arts organisations naturally want to address this, knowing their organisations and their work will be richer for including this missing community. Ableism has been a default setting for far too long, but it is also a choice. Organisations need to acknowledge the pluralism of our communities and make active choices to remove ableism from their practice and from their organisations. Book onto the sessions to begin, or extend, your active journey into anti-ableism. The session will be led by Vici Wreford-Sinnott who has championed disability equity for over 30 years. She is a leading figure in the UK Disability Arts Movement, and an acclaimed writer / director for stage and screen. She is currently completing PhD practice based research into performance, representation and reflection of disability in British Theatre. Friday 12 April - 1.30pm-3.00pm - Anti-Ableist Practices This professional development session for Arts Sector staff will look at what ableism looks like in the arts, how it manifests directly and indirectly in organisational ethos, culture and practice with some guidance on how to begin to address it to support meaningful change for disabled people and how they engage at all levels with your organisation and your work. Friday 19 April 1.30pm-3.00pm - Disabled Narratives in Drama This professional development session for Arts Sector staff will discuss Disabled Narratives in Drama and anti-ableist practices aimed at theatre, television and film companies, organisations and venues. Identifying ableist tropes and stereotypes and how to create anti-ableist work, processes and practice. Tuesday 23 April 4.00pm-5.3pm - Cultural Equity Beyond Access Many organisations assume that disability equity is simply about access which, whilst essential, is only part of the picture. Join us to begin, or extend, your active journey into anti-ableism. It's not enough to rely on individual anecdotal information from disabled staff members or audiences, who are obviously experts in their own experience, but it requires extensive professional knowledge to address ableism on an organisation wide basis. |
