Our Stomping Grounds Exhibition

Launching Online 16 February -16 April 2023

A group of nine actors on stage on a purpose built outdoor stage at Stockton International Riverside Festival. All are standing in front of white chairs, and are wearing a mix of black and white striped designed costume. They have both arms raised aloft in triumph.

The Our Stomping Grounds Exhibition idea came from ARC’s resident learning disability theatre company Full Circle. Building on the ideas of their SIRF commissioned performance Stomping Ground the company have been interested in themes of belonging, feeling valued and being able to thrive. It seemed like such an important time to connect and re-connect with other creative learning-disabled people across the Tees Valley – as safely as possible of course – to feel a strong sense of community and support and to reduce isolation after the effects of the lockdowns and shielding experiences we have had and some people continue to have.

This exhibition contains a number of elements – there is a wall showcasing some of Full Circle’s work over the last 10 years. There is a wall of surreal collages created by local residential home residents and Full Circle members who have been facilitating workshops illustrating that we need to look a little closer and see things from a different angle. We have a wall of Footprint Tyretrack Creative Writing including poetry from STEPs, Full Circle and individual creatives. Another wall takes us on a photographic journey of ‘the sights and sounds of our stomping grounds’ as local learning disabled people highlight places that mean something to them.
And our final wall is a series of group portraits celebrating some of our local artistic learning disability centred groups.

Thank you to ARC, the team at STEPs, John Dowson, to Longlast and Lorne House, and all the photographers, writers and artists, and all the groups involved. Thank you to Arts Council England for funding the project.

Coming Soon - 16 February!
