World's on Fire
World’s on Fire is a new play, a journey into what can happen when a town comes together to face global challenges through local strength. It is an ambitious new production written and directed by the award-winning Vici Wreford-Sinnott, whose work tours nationally and has been commissioned by the BBC for TV. Real local stories are woven together and shared by a cast of community performers and professional actors, and through original songs from the newly formed World’s on Fire Choir, to highlight Stockton as a place lit with passion, action and hope. Vici is spending time with Stockton and Tees Valley residents and local environmental groups, with whom the production is co-created and performed. World’s on Fire is all about community, it’s about keeping your heads up when the world tries to say you’re rubbish, it’s about things people love, it’s about beauty all around us, it’s about remembering to breathe, it’s about friendship, it’s about this town. It’s about you, it’s about me. Who we are looking for We are looking for confident, professional actors who work well workshopping new script, who enjoy ensemble work and who possibly already have some experience of working with large community casts. Ideally we'd like actors who can sing but this is not a traditional piece of musical theatre, so if you don't feel like you are a strong singer do not let that put you off applying. You might be right for the part in other ways! An open, generous and non-judgemental approach is essential for this project. It would help if you are committed to the themes of the show: challenging the negative narrative placed on Teesside; concern for the environment; and, a strong belief in the power of community. We welcome applications from all members of our local communities, including those from global majority, LGBT, and disabled communities. To minimise the carbon footprint of the show we are casting people who live in Tees Valley only. Tees Valley must be your main and only residence. Freelance Fees 3 day workshopping £450.00 inclusive plus the freelance fee for rehearsals and performance is £3250.00 inclusive Cast Four characters find themselves connected in a reclaimed old riverside shed which has become a community climate hub, where different groups meet to look after our area in a range of different ways, when an eviction notice is served and they are accused of anti-social behaviour. Bec is a young activist who is trying to get young people involved with climate activism and Disability rights. She's angry with the older generation. She's involved in food sustainability and is a wheelchair user hoping to create an accessible environment for all. She's passionate about injustice and loathes social media with its armchair activists full of negativity - she has a strong aversion to people with nothing good to say about the area. She brings together the connections between disability, climate and community action. Playing age: 20ish Ethnicity: Any Wheelchair using actor required Elena is older and never intended to become an activist with her hobbies -it just evolved. She loves wildlife and is someone who is more confident now that she's older. Elena is fired up by budget cuts, poor thinking, and planning cover-ups. She researches old laws and understands about community assets being transferred to the people. She's furious about the death of all the baby seals in the River Tees. Before she knows it she's heading up a Midnight Festival to galvanise local public support. Playing age: 50ish Ethnicity: Any Jude is an upcycling, recycling artist who loves cardboard sculpture. They are also a sound artist, enjoying making recordings in nature. They learned about land acknowledgements on a zoom during Covid from First Nation Canadian people and found it transformative in the way they thought of home. Jude is non-binary and wants to create safe communal wild, green spaces. Jude also takes recordings of peoples' stories to capture real histories. They also make ‘accidental’ recordings of conversations - subterfuge which could come in handy. Oh and they love social media. Playing age: 25ish Ethnicity: Any Non binary actor required Maurice is in his early to mid sixties, and is active, likes being busy. A former Teesside industry worker and union man, he retired and is now the allotment king - knows a thing or two about growing sturdy plants. He is traditional, salt of the earth but old-fashioned. He's not keen on the ‘attention grabbing’ methods modern-day protesters use, but he is concerned about the environment. Maurice doesn't see himself as an activist and would rather let the big charities take care of things as he doesn't think that local people can do much. He resists change as he finds it unsettling, but hasn't noticed that people's free speech is being eroded, something his dad would have fought for.
